Як зберегти здоров’я шкіри в спекотну пору: рекомендації фахівця

We increasingly encounter abnormal heat, sharp temperature fluctuations, and prolonged periods of intense sunshine. For the body, this is not just seasonal discomfort, but a serious physiological challenge that forces all systems to adapt. Doctor, scientist, candidate of medical sciences, and founder of the Swiss longevity brand Instytutum, Natalia Bobok, explains why summer skincare today is much more than SPF, and how UV protection, hydration support, moisturizing, and antioxidant defense help the skin adapt to heat more easily.

Why Skin Reacts to Heat First

We are accustomed to perceiving skin as an external covering, but in reality, it is one of the most important organs for thermoregulation and the primary barrier between the body and the environment. It is the first to come into contact with ultraviolet radiation, high temperatures, dry air, wind, pollution, and moisture loss.

Therefore, summer skincare is no longer a matter of comfort or aesthetics. It is a well-thought-out system of cellular protection.

Our body has its own “set point” for temperature – a range at which enzymes function optimally, biochemical reactions occur, proteins are synthesized, cell membranes function, and internal homeostasis is maintained. When the temperature begins to rise, thermoregulation mechanisms are activated, and the skin becomes one of the main tools helping the body cope with overheating.

UV Protection

It is now widely known that ultraviolet radiation is one of the main factors of photoaging and a key trigger for the development of melanoma and other malignant skin neoplasms. This is precisely why the regular use of sunscreens is one of the basic recommendations of all leading international dermatological associations for preventing photodamage, premature aging, and skin cancers.

The skin absorbs the primary impact of solar radiation, protecting deeper body structures. At the cellular level, UV radiation can directly damage cell DNA, and DNA damage itself is considered the first stage in the development of many forms of skin cancer.

If the body manages to repair this damage in time, the risk of pathological changes is significantly reduced. But when too much accumulates, cellular repair systems can no longer function without errors. It is these errors that can lead to mutations, disrupt gene function, and initiate processes underlying tumor development. Therefore, SPF is not just an aesthetic concern but one of the most crucial tools for protecting cells from photodamage.

Modern next-generation organic sun filters absorb the energy of ultraviolet radiation and convert it into a safe form, minimizing the risk of cell damage.

Maintaining Skin Hydration

If UV radiation is the first challenge of summer, then the second is moisture loss.

When body temperature rises, the body cools itself through sweat evaporation. Sweat glands become more active, water evaporates from the skin’s surface, and along with it, the body loses heat.

However, this water does not appear out of nowhere – it is a resource of the body.

In hot weather, we lose it much faster than under normal conditions. And this affects not only well-being but also the condition of the skin directly.

A cell lacking water cannot perform its functions fully. It loses volume, its membrane becomes less pliable, biochemical reactions slow down, nutrient transport works less efficiently, and enzymatic processes become less effective. Simply put, a dehydrated cell seems to shrink and gradually enters a state of functional exhaustion. Prolonged stress can even activate apoptosis mechanisms – programmed cell death.

This is why, after prolonged exposure to the sun or heat, the skin often shows signs of exhaustion: it becomes dull, less elastic, more sensitive, reacting with redness, tightness, or irritation. Sometimes, conversely, it starts producing even more sebum in an attempt to compensate for moisture loss.

One of the most common mistakes is believing that oily skin does not need hydration in the summer. In reality, sweat and sebum have nothing to do with adequate hydration. On the contrary, during periods of high temperatures, the skin especially requires multi-level hydration that helps maintain its water balance without creating a feeling of heaviness or occlusion.

Maintaining the Body’s Water Balance

No cream, no matter how good, can fully compensate for the body’s internal water deficit. That is precisely why in the summer, I always talk about two levels of hydration: external – through skincare, and internal – through sufficient fluid intake and maintaining water-salt balance.

In hot weather, the need for fluids naturally increases. A basic guideline is about 30 ml of pure water per 1 kg of body weight per day, but in hot weather, during physical exertion, or active sweating, this need can be significantly higher.

At the same time, the body loses not only water. Along with sweat, we daily lose electrolytes – sodium, potassium, chlorides, and other minerals necessary for the nervous system, heart, muscles, and normal cellular transport.

Therefore, in certain situations – during prolonged sun exposure, intense workouts, or a tendency towards rapid dehydration – it is advisable to pay attention not only to the amount of water consumed but also to its composition. Therapeutic-table waters with natural electrolyte content or special electrolyte solutions that help restore the body’s water-salt balance can be beneficial.

Antioxidant Cell Protection

Even if we have protected our skin with SPF and moisturized it well, it does not mean it is fully protected. In hot weather, another important process is triggered in the cells – oxidative stress.

What is Oxidative Stress?

Under the influence of high temperatures and ultraviolet radiation, a large number of free radicals are formed in the skin – unstable molecules that damage proteins, cell membrane lipids, enzymes, DNA, and even mitochondria – the main sources of cellular energy.

In response, cells activate their own defense system – the so-called heat shock response. This involves the synthesis of heat shock proteins that help cells survive stress and recover faster. But if the heat load is prolonged or too intense, the capabilities of this system gradually become depleted.

This is where antioxidants begin to play a key role. They are the only molecules capable of neutralizing free radicals and limiting oxidative stress – one of the main mechanisms of premature aging, loss of elasticity, appearance of pigmentation, uneven skin tone, and disruption of its barrier function.

I like to compare antioxidants to an additional layer of protection. Even if you use SPF and moisturize your skin sufficiently, antioxidants help it endure the heat period more easily. It’s like a hat on a sunny day: sunscreen is already working, but additional protection always helps reduce the load.

Therefore, antioxidants are traditionally recommended for morning skincare. For example, vitamin C pairs well with sunscreens and helps reduce the effects of UV stress. In clinical studies, it has demonstrated the ability to reduce redness after sun exposure, support collagen synthesis, and improve skin tone.

But in summer, it is important to think not only about daytime protection.

It is at night that the skin enters its most active recovery phase. During this time, repair processes intensify, structural proteins are synthesized, the barrier function is restored, and inflammatory load is reduced. Therefore, during periods of heat, it is especially important to use nighttime skincare that does not overload the skin but provides it with antioxidants and supports natural recovery processes.

Gentle Cleansing

Cleansing also remains important in the summer.

One of the most common mistakes is using overly aggressive cleansing products or washing your face too often, trying to completely remove sebum. In reality, such an approach can only increase transepidermal water loss, disrupt the lipid barrier, and make the skin even more sensitive to heat stress.

This is precisely why in the summer, I recommend choosing mild cleansing products that effectively remove impurities, excess sebum, and SPF residue, while preserving the skin’s natural pH, supporting the microbiome, and maintaining the integrity of its protective barrier. This approach creates optimal conditions for the subsequent action of moisturizing, antioxidant, and restorative components.

Summer Skincare is a System, Not a Single Product

Heat is much more than just high temperatures outside. For the body, it is a complex stress that affects psycho-emotional state, water balance, sweating, electrolyte levels, cellular metabolism, and natural defense mechanisms. For the skin, it is the simultaneous impact of ultraviolet radiation, overheating, moisture loss, and oxidative stress.

This is precisely why modern summer skincare must work on several levels simultaneously: provide reliable photo-protection, maintain water balance, help cells recover, and ensure sufficient antioxidant support.

I often say that beautiful skin is not created by a single “magic” jar or a single procedure. Its health is the result of daily decisions that we repeat over and over again. True skin longevity begins with such small but systematic habits.
